And once you get to that kind of power level, you're pretty much limited to drag racing. Plenty of thousand horsepower supra's and such with manual transmissions - but that's a different category of "thing". This has nothing to do with enjoyment btw. Even on the road, it is far far far easier for me to drive a 500 horsepower car with an flappy paddle automatic than it is with a manual. And allow for much closer (and more) gears. Once you start getting to 500, 600, 700 horsepower, especially if it's turbocharged, a manual transmission starts severely getting in the way of the speed in which you're able to drive the car, specifically on track.Ĭould you imagine a Mclaren 720s with a manual?Īutomatic transmissions lower the skill needed to drive these psycho death missiles. The DSG tune gives Normal D mode the eagerness of Sport without revving to 3500rpm for each gear when you're driving through your neighborhood or holding onto 5k rpm for 30 seconds after a quick blast that Sport does. So you'd sit there for 2 full seconds while it built up some boost in a low gear before you'd gain any speed. You let off the brakes and give it about 30% throttle and, when stock, the car wouldn't downshift when you really expect it to. By the time they complete their turn you've had to slow down to about 30mph. You're both going 40-60mph and they put on their turn signal. The scenario I always give (because it annoyed me so much) is when you're driving with about a 10 car distance to someone in front of you. I wanted something between Normal and Sport, which the DSG tune offers. Normal (or just regular D mode) was just too reluctant to have fun. I stayed in custom with everything set to Sport except the transmission which stayed in Normal. I can still change between Eco, Normal, Sport, and Custom.but it doesn't affect suspension.
